Profile

Scene: Interrogation Room

A harsh, fluorescent light illuminates the small interrogation room, cutting through the air like a blade. Officer Nick’s voice echoes once again, sharper than before.

Nick (raising his voice, irritated)
“Name?”

Jiang Ling sits with his head bowed, his messy black hair covering half his face as if the question doesn’t concern him. His white shirt is stained with dried blood, and his hands, crudely bandaged, still seep fresh crimson.

Nick (pounding the table)
“Hey! I said, what’s your name?”

Still no response from Jiang Ling.

Nick
“Listen, kid! I don’t care what reason you think you have. Assaulting six people—six—is a serious crime! You know who you beat up? One of them is a city councilman’s son! Do you have any idea how deep in trouble you are?”

At this, Jiang Ling slowly lifts his head. His gaze—calm, deep, and unsettling—meets Nick’s eyes. For a moment, Nick feels a chill climb up his spine. Jiang Ling holds the stare before lowering his head again, casually adjusting the bandages on his wrist. His slow, deliberate movements feel out of place in such a tense setting.

Nick, momentarily thrown off, lets his anger flare. A vein bulges on his temple as he glares at the young man who seems to be openly defying him.

Nick (furious)
“You—!”

Judy (a cool, authoritative female voice)
“That’s enough, Nick.”

Sergeant Judy appears at the doorway, a folder in one hand. Her piercing gaze sweeps over Jiang Ling before turning to Nick. Though she doesn’t speak loudly, there’s an unmistakable command in her voice.

Judy
“Step aside. Let me handle this.”

Nick’s expression twists with reluctance, but he lowers his raised hand, stomping over to one corner of the room.

Judy
“Jiang Ling, right? Manager of Firefly Burger.”

She sets the folder on the table, flipping it open to a particular page.

Judy (calm, resolute)
“According to this report, at around 2 a.m. this morning, you were involved in a violent altercation with six adult males in the alley behind your restaurant.”

Her tone tightens as she goes through the injuries sustained: fractured ribs, broken hands, twisted ankles, and a mild concussion.

Judy
“One of them ended up with four broken ribs, two had their right hands fractured, two suffered severe ankle sprains, and the last one—head trauma, mild concussion.”

She pauses and fixes Jiang Ling with a sharp stare, searching for any reaction. Yet his face remains impassive, unreadable.

Judy
“Jiang Ling, can you explain why you did this?”

Silence descends the moment the question is asked, as though the air in the interrogation room has frozen. Neither Nick nor Judy moves, both waiting for Jiang Ling’s answer. But he maintains his silence.

Slowly, Jiang Ling lowers his gaze, his fingers methodically adjusting the bandages on his wrist as if the question had never been posed. Judy’s brow furrows; she flips through the folder once more, her tone growing colder with each syllable.

Heartbeat

Judy (with warning)
“All right. If you won’t explain, let me tell you what you’re up against—”

Her eyes drop back to the report. She clears her throat and speaks more sternly now.

Judy
“Based on evidence from the scene and existing witness statements, you’re suspected of intentional assault, possibly causing significant bodily harm. And considering one of the victims is a councilman’s son…well, let’s just say this isn’t going to blow over.”

Jiang Ling keeps his head lowered, appearing indifferent to every word. Judy’s expression darkens; her patience is wearing thin.

Judy “If the court finds you guilty of intentional assault, you could face up to three years in prison. Should the victims press further charges, or should the investigation reveal more serious harm, your sentence could be even heavier. Are you aware of that?”

Despite the gravity of her words, the room remains deathly silent. Nick stands off to the side, fidgeting restlessly, glaring at Jiang Ling in frustration.

Suddenly, Jiang Ling raises his head. Under the harsh overhead light, his eyes seem fathomless. Just as Judy is about to push him for an answer, their gazes lock.

In that instant, it feels as though something inside Judy’s heart is struck. There’s no fear, no anger, and no remorse in Jiang Ling’s stare—but a profound, indescribable sorrow and unyielding calm. He simply looks at her, quietly, steadily.

A tremor runs through Judy’s heart. It’s as though this gaze pierces her, quelling the anger and skepticism that had been building inside her just moments before.

Silence takes hold of the interrogation room once more.

Judy (takes a slow breath, her tone softening) “You…really won’t say anything?”

Jiang Ling remains mute.

They stare at each other, as if the rest of the world has been shut away. Nick opens his mouth to speak but finds no chance to break through this unspoken tension.

Judy blinks, still brimming with questions and uncertainties. Yet there is something in Jiang Ling’s unflinching composure that makes it difficult for her to continue her interrogation or admonish him further. Even Judy herself can’t articulate why she feels so shaken at this moment.

Eventually, she decides to break the standoff. She tears her gaze away from Jiang Ling, returning to her file, feigning composure as she flips through the pages.

Judy
“…All right. Since you’re not going to talk right now, we’ll leave it at that.”

She exhales quietly, forcing down a twinge of unease and indecipherable emotion. Her tone reverts to the detached professionalism of a public servant.

A brief stalemate ensues, then Judy lifts the folder in a businesslike manner and begins to read out the charges and legal consequences Jiang Ling faces. Her voice reverberates in the still air. Yet throughout it all, Jiang Ling never changes his expression, as though this litany of accusations and potential penalties has nothing to do with him.

Maybe, at this point, they are both trying to find an answer, but neither can read it in the other’s eyes.

Scene 1: Firefly Burger – Day One

Late afternoon sunlight streams into Firefly Burger, though the place is nearly empty. Judy arrives in uniform, prompting wary looks from the staff behind the counter.

Judy (with a polite nod)
“Hello, I’m Officer Judy. I’d like some information about Jiang Ling, if possible.”

The employees exchange uneasy glances but guide Judy to a seat. Shortly after, one of the employees, appearing more senior than the others, cautiously approaches her.

Employee (cautious)
“Officer, what would you like to know?”

Judy flips open her notepad. Though she remains courteous, her tone carries the edge of an investigation.

Judy
“Jiangling has been taken into custody. I need to ask him about his usual work habits.”

The employee nods stiffly and leads Judy to the back office, where stacks of ledgers lie in waiting.

Employee
“These are last month’s records—daily sales figures and inventory usage. Jiang Ling instructed us to take home any leftovers…but he always ended up taking quite a bit himself.”

He hesitates, wearing a conflicted expression. Judy, picking up on this, presses him further.

Judy
“How much did he take? Any idea where he was taking it?”

Employee (scanning the ledgers)
“Sometimes enough for two or three people. At first, we thought he might be keeping it for himself or maybe sharing it with friends… Then we heard he’d drop it off somewhere, but we never really looked into it.”

Judy compares numbers in the ledgers, noting how Jiang Ling often ordered “extra” stock that never got carried over to the next day. Each time, it was marked as “disposed.”

Judy (closing the ledger thoughtfully)
“If it wasn’t for profit or himself…where did it all go?”

The employee shrugs, visibly uneasy. It seems he doesn’t have any more insight.

Scene 2: City Streets – Day Two

The midday sun beats down on the sidewalk as Judy pores over a stack of files, making her rounds among local shops and convenience stores. She’s determined to find out where Jiang Ling’s surplus food ended up.

Finally, outside a convenience store that reportedly saw Jiang Ling frequently, she meets an older clerk who remembers a young man in a white shirt. He’d routinely appear late at night with multiple bags of untouched burgers, plus a few bottles of water.

Older Clerk
“He always carried several heavy bags, but never once complained. Sometimes he’d buy extra bottles of water. From the look of it, he wasn’t keeping that food for himself.”

Judy nods, her suspicions beginning to take shape.

Scene 3: A Makeshift Shelter – Day Three
After two more days of interviewing local residents, Judy follows rumors into a dilapidated section of the city where makeshift tents and abandoned buildings provide scant refuge for the homeless. She navigates narrow alleys, stepping over scattered trash and debris.

Eventually, she encounters a small cluster of ramshackle shelters made from old cardboard and plastic sheets. Strewn about are several plastic bags emblazoned with the Firefly Burger logo—empty now, but not long ago filled with uneaten meals.

Judy stops to speak with a couple of people huddled near one of the shelters. They explain that a mother and her young daughter have been drifting from one corner of the district to another for weeks. Late at night, the pair sometimes pass by the alley behind Firefly Burger.

“The manager there—he’s a quiet type,” an older woman says to Judy. “But whenever that mother and child show up at the back door, he gives them the day’s unsold food so they won’t go hungry.”

This new piece of information makes Judy pause. She glances at the crumpled burger wrappers on the ground, imagining how often they might have been a lifeline for those in need.

Judy (softly to herself) “So, Jiang Ling’s been helping them?”

A tangle of emotions wells inside her. She recalls Jiang Ling’s stoic demeanor in the interrogation room—the stark contrast to these grim surroundings sharpens the ache in her chest. It’s becoming clear there is far more to Jiang Ling’s story than meets the eye.

Scene 4: Police Station – Simultaneously

At the station, Nick studies Jiang Ling through a pane of glass or iron bars. Three days have passed since Jiang Ling’s arrival. He’s grown visibly thinner, seemingly surviving on next to nothing, yet his silence remains unbroken. It’s as though he’s shut out the world.

Nick’s anger and bewilderment mount. He enters the interrogation room, slapping a file hard onto the table.

Nick (derisive, unfiltered)
“Quit acting like you’re so deep. It’s been three days, and you haven’t said a word about assaulting those men. If you were innocent, why don’t you defend yourself?”

Jiang Ling lifts his head briefly, fixing Nick with a distant look, but says nothing.

Nick (voice harsh)
“You do realize you’re in a world of trouble, right? The councilman’s not going to let this slide. If nobody clears your name, you’ll rot in here!”

Jiang Ling remains unmoved, gaze downcast. Nick’s frustration hits a breaking point. His fist thumps against the table, rattling it.

Nick
“So you’re some kind of violent nut? Getting off on hurting people? Speak up! Or do you think you’ve got connections? Let me tell you—nobody’s bailing you out this time!”

The interrogation room resonates with Nick’s tirade, yet Jiang Ling doesn’t so much as flinch. A thick tension pervades the air, ready to erupt at any moment.

Nick
“You’re not even trying to protect anyone. You pick on the defenseless—what kind of big shot does that make you?”

He notices the faintest twitch in Jiang Ling’s expression at the word “protect,” and Nick seizes the opportunity to taunt him further.

Nick
“Oh, I see that got a reaction. So you do care about something? Don’t tell me you’re proud of beating up six men—maybe you’re just a coward who can’t handle real responsibility—”

Nick’s words die mid-sentence. He glances down at his waist, only to see his gun is missing. A frigid wave of alarm washes over him. He jerks his head up and realizes Jiang Ling is casually holding the weapon.

Nick (startled, shouting)
“Hey—! Put the gun down! What do you think you’re doing?!”

Jiang Ling observes the gun with a dispassionate gaze, rotating it slowly in his hand.

Nick
“I said—put it down!”

The tension in the room spikes, crackling like static electricity. At that instant, the interrogation room door flies open.

Judy (sharply)
“Enough! Both of you—stop!”

She strides inside, taking in Nick’s panic and the firearm in Jiang Ling’s grasp. She immediately recognizes the danger.

Judy (urgent)
“Nick, calm down.”

She steps between them, trying to defuse the situation. Nick remains rattled, his throat working as he gulps for air. Judy, however, focuses on Jiang Ling, speaking in a firm but measured tone.

Judy
“Jiang Ling, put the gun down. Let’s settle this peacefully.”

Jiang Ling throws Judy an impassive glance, then looks down at the gun in his hand. After a moment’s hesitation, he hands it over to Nick, barrel pointed safely away.

Jiang Ling (quietly)
“I wasn’t going to use it. You’re right…I can’t protect anyone.”

Nick freezes, gun in hand, unsure how to respond. Judy gently touches Nick’s shoulder, prompting him to lower the weapon. She takes a steadying breath, and explains what she’s learned from her investigation.

Judy

Judy
“These days, I found that things were not as we initially thought. Jiang Ling was not looking for trouble with anyone, he was protecting a homeless mother and her daughter. That night, he heard a noise outside and found six people surrounding them, including the congressman’s son.

When the congressman’s son was tearing the poor mother’s clothes off and trying to violate her,

Jiang ling rushed forward, knocked them down, and then fell down exhausted. Since then, he has been blaming himself, probably thinking that he has not fulfilled his responsibility to keep them safe.”

She looked down at the blood oozing from Jiang Ling’s bandage. There was worry in her eyes.”

She glances down at the fresh blood seeping through Jiang Ling’s bandages. Concern flickers in her eyes.

Judy
“They are safe now, thanks to you.”

Jiang Ling lowers his gaze, silent.

Judy takes a step closer, her voice gentler but still laced with resolve.

Judy
“Jiang Ling, calm down. We can talk this through. That mother and child are here at the station to give their statements. They’re waiting outside. You can see them if you want.”

Scene: Outside the Police Station

Jiang Ling steps out onto the station’s front steps. In the distance, he spots a little girl clinging to her mother, fear etched into her face—until she recognizes him. She breaks into a run.

Little Girl
“Jiang ling!”

She throws herself into Jiang Ling’s arms, clutching him as if afraid he’ll vanish. He silently holds her, his hardened features finally softening.

From a distance, Judy watches, recalling Jiang Ling’s solemn expression in the interrogation room. Now, for the first time, she sees him smile—a small, genuine gesture that changes his entire demeanor.

Jiang Ling gently pats the girl’s head, then meets Judy’s gaze.

Jiang Ling (quiet but sincere)
“Thank you.”

Judy hesitates, then offers him a faint smile in return as she steps closer.

Judy (softly)
“If you ever need help again, come find me. You did what you could to protect them.”

Jiang Ling simply inclines his head, turning his focus back to the girl in his arms. Against the gathering dusk, his protective embrace exudes warmth and solace.

Nick watches from a short distance, saying nothing. His grip on the gun loosens, and he no longer looks at Jiang Ling with hostility.

Final Note

Neon signs flicker, lighting up the darkened streets outside the police station. Jiang Ling’s silhouette, holding the little girl close while her mother wipes away tears, conveys a quiet strength. Judy stands at the station doors, watching them walk off into the night. A subtle sense of admiration rises within her, though she can’t fully articulate it.

Judy (murmuring to herself)
“Real courage doesn’t mean you can save everyone, but at least he tried.”

With that final whisper, the night enfolds them. What remains is the echo of compassion and resolve in the heart of someone who dared to protect those who had no one else.
